It seems like every year you do your health checkup and get your blood tested, the “healthy” range of testosterone seems to drop more and more. I remember in 2017 the “healthy” range was between 340ng/dl – 1150ng/dl. After getting checked recently in 2020 the new range is between 240ng/dl – 950ng/dl.
What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is a male steroid hormone. It is naturally produced by the human body, with a small amount in women compared to men. Testosterone is categorized in what is called androgen hormone. It is responsible for the development of male reproductive organs and aims to differentiate between men and women.
As a man, low testosterone is simply something you do not want to have. This hormone is literally what makes you a man. With it in the low range, you’ll experience a multitude of negative issues like unable to burn fat easily or feeling depressed for absolutely no reason.
Here are 5 reasons why I keep my levels high and recommend you to do the same as well.
1. Helps With Depression
It was first discovered in men with hypogonadism, who tend to be more prone to developing mood disorders compared to those with normal levels.
TRT improves mood for the majority of men due to physiologically enhancing neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.
The mood can also be affected by many of the same factors that lower testosterone such as lack of exercise, poor diet, and stress. In addition, it can also raise cortisol, which also needs cholesterol to be made, utilizes those resources, and shunts them away from testosterone production.
I’m currently on testosterone replacement therapy and I can personally vouch for this. The first change I experienced was stability in my mood. I would no longer feel depressed for absolutely any reason and feel stronger mentally which is needed in todays world.
2. Keeps Your Bones Strong.
Men receiving TRT treatments experience significant changes in bone density.
Men with low levels of testosterone have a higher chance of osteoporotic fracture and bone decay.
If you want to maintain strong and healthy bones into old age, it’s important that you make it a priority to optimize your hormonal health.
I train in Muay Thai so it definitely helps me from breaking a bone.
3. Helps Increase Muscle Mass
Testosterone drives your muscle growth by increasing muscle protein synthesis. With high levels, muscles begin to increase protein uptake, recover faster, and are able to grow back bigger and stronger.
At the same time, it isn’t a miracle drug that’ll get you huge quick. You’ll still have to be consistent in the gym to see changes.
4. Increased Competitiveness
In a study, testosterone and cortisol were measured in six university tennis players across six matches during their varsity season. Testosterone rose just before most matches, and players with the highest pre-match levels had the most positive improvement in mood before their matches. After matches, mean testosterone rose for winners relative to losers, especially for winners with very positive moods after their victories and who evaluated their own performance highly. Winners with rising testosterone had higher testosterone before their next match, in contrast to losers with falling testosterone, who had lower testosterone before their next match. Cortisol was not related to winning or losing, but it was related to seed (top players having low cortisol), and cortisol generally declined as the season progressed.
That being said, testosterone will naturally make you more competitive.
5. Helps With The Ladies
Researchers ran an experiment in which pairs of men were instructed to compete for the attention of an attractive university student.
The higher a man’s levels, the more the female student indicated how much she “clicked” with him.
Researchers concluded that higher testosterone levels are correlated with the behaviors that lead to mating success.
This was a more subtle one for me. Its as if I walk in a room and women can sense my presence more than usual. Even my current relationships I’ve had since going on TRT naturally improved without me doing anything different. The women were more submissive and caring.
